There is a Fediverse alternative to Substack called Ghost. It allows you to host blogs and newsletters in a very similar way to Substack, but it has much less problematic management and you can host your own Ghost-powered site if you want to.

Mastodon includes a built-in post scheduling system, which lets you create posts that will be automatically published at certain times and dates. However, you need to use a third party app to access this system.

You do not have to use Mastodon through its official mobile app!

There are many other ways of using your Mastodon account, and most people who try the alternatives tend to prefer them.

The most popular alternatives are third party apps and your server's own website. These tend to have more features and faster updates. You can find out more at:

- If you can't remember your password on Mastodon:

Go to your server's website and click the "forgot your password" link on the sign-up page. This will email you a password reset link.

- If you can't remember which email address you used when signing up on Mastodon:

Go to your email app and search for "Mastodon". Look for the confirmation email you received from the Mastodon server when you signed up, the address you used will be in the header of the confirmation email.

If you've ever wondered what :Fediverse: means, it's the logo of the Fediverse!

There is no central authority to decide an official logo, but :Fediverse: is by far the most commonly used logo and most widely accepted.

The designer of the logo uploaded high quality versions of it to Wikimedia Commons:

You can attach images, video files or audio files to Mastodon posts:

🖼️ Images can be PNG, JPG, HEIF, WEBP, AVIF or GIF (including animated GIFs)

📺 Video clips can be MP4, M4V, MOV or WebM files

🔈 Audio clips can be MP3, OGG, WAV, FLAC, OPUS, AAC or 3GP files

The maximum file size for each image is usually 16 MB, for video or audio it's usually 99 MB. There is no restriction on running time, just file size.

Mastodon includes an optional feature which lets you automatically delete your posts after a certain amount of time. If you want to, Mastodon lets you block DMs from people you don't follow:

1. Log in on your Mastodon server's website
2. Click "🔔 Notifications" (on mobile it's just a 🔔 icon at the bottom of the screen)
3. Click "show settings" double arrow icon in top right corner
4. Set "Unsolicited private mentions" to "Ignore"

Bear in mind that no one will know you've done this, so some people mention they've done this on their profile to avoid any confusion (but this is optional).

Do you want to hide posts that link to certain websites? You can do this with Mastodon Filters:

1. Create a new filter
2. Add domain names of the sites that you don't want to see links to (e.g. example.com), use new keyword for each domain
3. UN-tick box marked "whole word" for each keyword
4. Save filter

If you're using Mastodon's web interface on a computer, you might like to know there are built-in keyboard shortcuts for almost all its functions. There's a list of all the shortcuts here:

You just press the shortcut key when you're NOT typing a post, and it will do whatever it's assigned to.

You can also see the shortcut list built into Mastodon by typing Shift+? (or whatever your local keyboard layout uses to get the question mark to appear).

If your main timeline on Mastodon is getting too full and too busy to keep up with, you might want to consider using the "Lists" feature. This lets you move accounts you follow over to separate mini-timelines and off your main timeline.

Just a little warning about editing polls on Mastodon: if you edit any of the options that people can vote for, it resets all the votes back to zero.

So, if you're posting a poll, make sure the options are correct at the start and don't edit them later (unless you're okay with resetting the votes).

This reset is apparently to prevent people being fooled into voting for something they don't want.

If you're using a keyboard and accessing Mastodon through your server's website, you can type emoji without having to use the picker.

Just type a colon : and without any spaces start typing a keyword. It will then present you with five emoji that match the keyword, and you can choose the one you want with the arrow keys.

For example if you type :sun you will see five different emoji for "sun".

If the one you want isn't suggested, click on the 🙂 picker icon instead.

If you're searching Mastodon, there are special phrases called "operators" that you can include to narrow down your search. For example, if you just want to search your own posts you can include the operator from:me alongside your keywords.

There's a complete guide to searching Mastodon including a list of all the operators at:

If you want your Mastodon account to be private, you need to do two things:

1. Set your default posting visibility to "followers-only", more info on this at https://fedi.tips/who-can-see-my-posts-in-mastodon-how-do-i-send-dms-in-mastodon

2. Switch on requiring approval for followers, so that no one can follow you without permission. More about this at https://fedi.tips/restricting-who-can-follow-you-in-mastodon

This doesn't apply retrospectively, any public posts you've already made will remain public. This just sets the default visibility for new posts.

Most hashtags are pretty obvious, you just put # in front of a topic. Had several questions about how the main "Home" feed works on Mastodon. Here's what it shows:

1. All posts from all accounts you follow in chronological order, newest at top
2. All posts shared by accounts or groups you follow
3. Posts that use hashtags you follow in chronological order, newest at top

...and that's it, there's nothing else on your Home feed. It doesn't push anything else at you, it doesn't hide anything from you unless you ask it to. No algorithms, no ads.

Do you want to make your own Mastodon server? It's much easier and cheaper than you think, there are three ways to do it:

NON-TECHY - A "managed hosting" company does all the techy stuff for you behind the scenes. Starts from 5 to 10 euros per month all inclusive.

SLIGHTLY TECHY - Services like @yunohost@toot.aquilenet.fr provide a graphical interface for VPSs & home servers.

VERY TECHY - Manually installing using the official documentation and command lines.

You don't need to use weird spellings or algospeak for any topics on the Fediverse ("unalived", "seggs" etc). There is no automated moderation or algorithm on here, moderation happens entirely through human beings and posts are shown in chronological order.

In fact it's better that you use the correct spellings for difficult topics so that people with genuine traumas related to them can filter them more easily.

The official Mastodon apps still do not indicate if an account has transferred to a new server. (The website, web app and third party apps do indicate this correctly.)

This means people using Mastodon through the official apps may attempt to follow the old accounts and just get an error message, without knowing why.
